Art refers to a variety of creative activities that enable a demonstration of expression or representation. This can include painting, photography, illustration, performance, and writing. It is unrestricted in terms of medium, if it is creative, it could be considered of form of art.

Contemporary art is a subsection of this that refers specifically to any of these art forms that were created by artists who are currently working or work that has been made within what could be considered recent history, i.e. since the early-mid 20th century. It is common for these pieces to be experimental and subversive of what is considered traditional practices. Contemporary art and artists are often related to controversy within society with phrases such as “I could do that”, however this usually comes from people who may not have a familiarity with art or the art industry.
